Seasons of Change

It’s that time of year again and the season of change has begun. October 31st was the Annual Half Time Show during the BC Lions and Sask. Rough Riders game, (which BC won by the way) which saw the Cedar Hills Caledonian Pipe Band being one of only two pipe bands to take part in it this year, but it ended up being a great show.

November brings many things for the legion with Poppy Days, Veterans Week, Remembrance Day and of course Executive elections on November 15th and rounding it off will be the Honors and Awards lunch hosted by the Ladies Aux. on the 27th.

Our web site has gone through a couple of changes and now includes live twitter feeds for both the Legion and the Pipe Band, be sure and check them out and follow us on twitter as well. Not only is twitter a great new way to drive interest into the Lounge our facebook page is gaining members as well. Be sure and check them both out.

We are updating things and trying to get a better presence on the web and attract more people to the Whalley Legion, gain more members and let people know what is going on. With all that there are now four ways to follow us and get all the latest news. Not every one will have the latest breaking news but each will have great links.

Veterans Week November 5-11, 2010 … how will you remember ?

Each year, from November 5 to 11, Canadians join together to celebrate Veterans’ Week – this year is no different. During this week, hundreds of commemorative ceremonies and events will take place across the country to recognize the achievements of our Veterans and honour those who made the ultimate sacrifice.

BC Legion Highland Gathering – Squamish

The Cedar Hills Caledonian Pipe Band headed up to Squamish on the Friday (June 18th) evening to take part in the Annual BC Legion Highland Gathering that moves around year to year and hosted by different Legions within BC.

Saturday, June 19th bright and early all the bands lined up for standing inspection in downtown Squamish followed by the parade of bands.  Things went really well and I hope to add more photos and some video later to show off how the band looked and sounded on parade. Each band had there time in the spot light going past the review stand, 13 bands in total. The best part of the parade was the mass band, all the bands formed up together at the end of the parade route and then made the return trip back to the start with several hundred pipers and drummers playing away. The sound was amazing.

Several of the members in the band took part in the piping and drumming competitions and Elizabeth took 2nd place in the Novice Tenor 2/4 March and Ronald got a 3rd in the Open Tenor MSR, Joel got 4th for Best Bass Drummer on Parade and Tristan took 4th in chanter after only playing for 4 months. The band entered the Grade V band competition, our very first attempt at competition and took 3rd place. All the comments were very good for only being able to have a mini band, 4 pipers, 2 tenor, 1 side and 1 bass drum on the competition field.

The weather was great although the Squamish winds did make there presence known.

The dinner and awards was great as well, with the Piper Majors each being presented with a copy of Pioneer Pipers of BC and the Drum Sgt’s receiving a copy of Pioneer Pipe Bands of BC both written by Carl Ian Walker.
